Maison 203 opens the new year by presenting the new “Kalikon” collection in Paris, at the Maison et Objet fair, a major international exhibition for luxury design and interior decoration, taking place from January 22nd to the 26th. Designer Giulio Iacchetti created the new collection in which aesthetics and functionality, geometry and movement, mechanics and style mix by combining talent and the use of 3D printing for proposing hidden closing mechanisms. The collection, which includes two necklaces, one long necklace, two pairs of earrings and one ring, is based on a series of 3D printed rings that are combined together. The addition of ball joints makes the bijoux’s structure fully flexible. This unique motion is due to the presence of a small space on the outer circumference of each ring, a track that houses the joint connecting one element to another. Jewellery making is one of the crafts that best shows what 3D printing can offer in terms of mass-customized, on-demand production. Not just in terms of new possibilities, but also for broadening design and production access to a wide range of young creatives and startups. Elements Lab, a young company based in Taiwan and led by founder Ting Tang, began by offering a small scale 3D printing service. As the business and their design proficiency grew, they have expanded by leveraging new commercial channels, for example by opening a Shapeways Shop. Last year, the Treviso, Italy-based fashion design house Maison 203 awed the fashion world with the Armure, a 3D printed clutch designed with a unique mixture of organic and geometric characteristics, taking after the spherical nature of the cypress fruit. Since then, Maison 203 has kicked off 2016 with their new Kalikon jewelry collection, featuring six different 3D printed pieces at the Maison et Objet fair this past January. Now, Maison 203 is refocusing back on the clutch bag, and have created the tropical-inspired Ivy, their newest 3D printed clutch designed by Odo Fioravanti. Once again, Maison 203 has used 3D printing and design to explore the dialogue between nature and artifice, creating a flowery and hypnotic clutch bag.
